The Business of Being Born.
Over at SEX, there’s a thread with a link to a documentary called The Business of Being Born. Rikki Lake and Abby Epstein follow several women through their pregnancy and birth process. This documentary has opened my eyes in regards to women and giving birth in the United States.
I urge you, all women and men alike, watch this documentary. Things are going on in obstetric care that are just not right. Women have been having babies for millions of years without the assistance of physicians. Why is it that now, within the last century, we have such a dependance upon modern medicine when it comes to a natural thing our bodies do?
I’m not saying that women who have a birth attended by an ob/gyn are bad. They aren’t. Not at all. Uninformed, perhaps. Or high risk. (in which case I fully support the decision to go to a medical doctor who is qualified to handle your situation.) But chances are if you’re the average woman, you’re going to have an average, minimal risk pregnancy.
Anyway, don’t take my word for it. Go out and get the facts yourself. You can watch The Business of Being Born here, and then comment to tell me what you thought.
