…Not the only country.

I saw this on my live feed on facebook today:

“America: the only country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed without eating, elderly going without needed meds, and mentally ill without treatment – yet we have a benefit for the people of Haiti on 31 TV stations. 99% of people won’t have the guts to copy and repost this!”

… America isn’t the only country with these problems. We held a benefit for Haiti because at the time, Haitians needed all the help they could get. They had just been struck by a terrible tragedy, which was made even worse by the fact that they are one of the poorest nations in the world.

If it pains you that much to give money to people in need… just don’t. But don’t make others feel bad for giving their hard earned dollars to someone who needs them more. I know many people, myself included, who donated money they couldn’t REALLY spare, for whatever reason. But we did it anyway. Even if it meant being a little behind. We did it anyway.

And wouldn’t you want the people in Haiti, were they able, to do the same for the United States if the role was reversed? I know I would.

One Response to “…Not the only country.”

  • Anna:

When one of my old high school friends posted that on her feed I asked her:

“So, how many times in the last few months have you donated money to the foster care system? How many elderly people did you help to get medicine? How much community service have you done to help the mentally ill? Because if the answer to ANY of those is “none” then please step down off that soap box and b\put the blow horn away. Seriously. Then, when you are done, book a ticket to Haiti, walk up to somebody on the street and explain to them that since they aren’t an American, they aren’t worth the money and tell me how you feel. I bet you’ll feel as foolish as you SHOULD feel for posting something like that to facebook.”

She immediately unfriended me so I just assumed her answer was “none”. That attitude PISSES me off to no end.
